On their new album Savoy Truffle don’t care at all about playlist and radio suitability, about fast clicks and stupid algorithms. But they care all the more about loving details, surprising musical twists and great melodies.
"From ABBA to Zappa" – that’s how music fans murmured to each other in a past century when they wanted to illustrate the whole range of their record collection. And that didn’t just mean "from A to Z," but also "from flawless disco pop to intricate avant-garde rock." It was a time when, full of anticipation, you carried home a new treasure trove of records you’d saved from your pocket money, when you spent hours creating the perfect mixtape – when music was still valued.
With their eighth album, "Dinosaur Sr." (pronounced "Dinosaur Senior") Savoy Truffle now conjures up this bygone world again: In 14 songs, the band doesn’t care at all about playlist and radio suitability, about quick clicks and stupid algorithms. But they care all the more about loving details, surprising musical twists and great melodies. Savoy Truffles enchanting retro sound is sometimes intimate and chamber music-like, sometimes epic and cinematic; sometimes poppy and catchy, sometimes wild and weird – sometimes all in one song!
"An adventure in stereo" it says on the record sleeve, and so from the hypnotic opening sequence of "(The Hardest Part) Is Being Born" to the rumbling final chord of "The Hitchhikers Guide," we embark on an adventurous journey with elephants and cats, galaxies and oceans, love, joy, hate, sorrow, hope and dinosaurs. The matching, lovingly collaged, retro-futuristic artwork transforms the album into a true work of art.
As with their last two albums, the musicians recorded and mixed all the tracks themselves over a period of 2 years. The recordings were mastered by Marcel Sude, who has been working regularly with the band since 1997.
Savoy Truffle is a mini-big band of 8 individualists who don’t intend a musical revolution but rather to make this world a slightly better place to be – with cleverly arranged, intelligent, stylish and ultimately beautiful pop songs.
“It never gets boring when Savoy Truffle are on stage, breaking down all boundaries between genres in order to re-arrange them to what they call ‘Unchartable Pop’. Pop music – not shallow, but intelligent. Songs – deep, but not highbrow.” (Saarbrücker Zeitung)
“Unconventional perfectionists who for decades have been defying the mainstream.” (Saarländischer Rundfunk)
